Before John Dougherty became involved full time as a financial planner, he managed an accounting and tax firm for many years. Over that period, John focused much of his efforts on minimizing tax costs for his clients. He continues to be credentialed as a Certified Public Accountant, and as such, is required to annually participate in 40 hours of continuing education, including changing tax laws, so that he is up-to-date on the ever-complex tax code.
John works with his clients to:
- Minimize capital gains and other taxes
- Reduce taxes on social security income
- Help legally and intelligently gift assets to heirs and others
A common problem many investors see when they move their assets to a new advisor is the wholesale selling of "old" securities so that the new advisor can collect commission on buying "new" securities. The result for the client is often an ugly capital gains tax surprise the folowing April 15th. This doesn't happen at Dougherty & Associates, LLC. Because we receive no commission for selling product, we can objectively evaluate the client's tax situation and strategically buy and sell securities in the best interest of our client.
